FAQ: Types of wands

As of 2026, there are several types of wands available.

1: Vintage: These would also be classed as mechanical wands, some are all-in-one designs like the BD-10 and some are two piece like the BD-50.   These may be around 100 years old, and were manufactured under very different safety standards.  Operating frequencies will vary, but 100 to 500kHz is normal, and these work nicely with extension and body cables.  Some units have odd fittings for the electrodes though.

2: Mechanical: As typefied by the BD-10 and BD-50 wands from Electro Technic Products.   Modern design and parts, high output, all around workhorses.  Operating frequency of 300 to 500kHz making them well suited for extension and body cables.

3: Solid state: These eliminate the "Wagner's hammer" assembly used in the vintage and mechanical wands, replacing it with a solid state trigger mechanism.  Typically a lower output power, and a more "gritty" feel than the mechanicals.  Operating frequency usually 300 to 500kHz, but their limited output power struggles with the extra load of a body or extension cable.

4: Tesla:  To my knowlege there is only one true tesla coil wand, which is the ETP BD-20.  This wand runs at about 5MHz, making it a poor choice for use with body contacts or extension cables because of the much higher losses caused by the higher operating frequency.  But it has a lovely feathery feel which you can't get any other way.

5: Cordless solid state!:  These are rechargable units, similar to most solid statae wands in most respects, but lacking the need for a 110V/220V plug.  These also work in the 300 to 500kHz range, but really don't need either sort of cable in most cases.
